The Greatest Hero

All of us have heroes.  People we admire, emulate, and look up to.  Some even worship their hero.  Cults replace the worship of God with some human personality.  That personality becomes a hero to those who follow him/her.  When Moses came to the end of his life God buried him away from the Israelites so that they wouldn’t set up a shrine or go to his grave and worship.  God does not share His glory of worship.  Jesus said in Matthew 22:37 ,“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”

In recent years, our nation has had a hero deficit.  We tend to lavish our attention, resources, and adulation upon the wrong kinds of heroes.  Here are the top ten celebrities on Instagram:
  • Selena Gomez: 133 million followers. ...
  • Cristiano Ronaldo: 121 million followers. ...
  • Ariana Grande: 117 million followers. ...
  • Beyoncé: 111 million followers. ...
  • Kim Kardashian: 108 million followers. ...
  • Taylor Swift: 106 million followers. ...
  • Kylie Jenner: 104 million followers. ...
  • Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson: 100 million followers.
  • Justine Bieber: 97 million followers.
  • Neymar Jr. 89.7 million followers.[i]

We need to reexamine our priorities and admire those who exhibit bravery and keep us safe: first responders, teachers who sacrifice and give of themselves to educate our children, soldiers who defend our freedom.  We should admire those who instruct us and lead us spiritually.

There is nothing wrong with admiring athletes or other famous people.  There are many who use their platforms for great causes.  Many of us would identify our heroes from our own family.  Parents who loved us, sacrificed for our education and well-being.  Perhaps a pastor or youth pastor who led us to the Lord.

The greatest hero is the Lord Jesus Christ.  There is nobody else who comes close. Why is He the greatest hero? Because He left the splendor of heaven and came to this dusty planet so that you and I might experience the joys of forgiveness and be reconciled to God. Philippians 2:6-8 says, “Who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, But made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”

He is the greatest hero because Jeremiah 31:3 says, “He loves us with an everlasting love.” He is a hero because He was Emmanuel, which means “God with us.” He is a hero because of His unselfish act. He gave up His life as a ransom for my sins. Mark 10:45 says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

He is the greatest because He redeemed fallen humanity from sin and death. Revelation 5:9 says, “And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” The greatest hero is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Rebuilding the Broken Altar of Prayer

In Matthew 21: 12-13 , “ Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’” Jesus made this declaration, “My house shall be called a house of prayer!”  I believe that God is calling us back to the altar of prayer.  For several weeks the Lord has dealt with me about rebuilding the broken altar of prayer in our personal and corporate lives.  If we are going to see spiritual breakthrough in our churches and communities then we must rebuild and return to the altar of prayer. Wayman Rogers writes, “The ministry of prayer is the most important of all ministries in the church.  Prayer creates the atmosphere and binds the powers of darkness so the gospel of Jesus can go forward and the church can prosper....

The Shout of a King is Among Them

Numbers 23:21 - “He has not observed iniquity in Jacob, Nor has He seen wickedness in Israel. The Lord his God  is  with him, And the shout of a King  is  among them.” In this passage of Scripture, the king of Moab had hired the prophet Balaam to speak a curse over the children of Israel.   He saw Israel as a threat to his kingdom.   Numbers 22:2-3 – “Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. And Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel.” When the enemy sees the people of God rising up in faith, he becomes very concerned and moves to keep us from fulfilling our assignment.   We learn in Numbers, Balaam could only speak what the Lord gave him to speak.   Instead of a curse he speaks a blessing. The enemy seeks our destruction, but God!   Listen to the conversation between God and Satan in ...

They Turned Back in the Day of Battle

Psalms 78:9 – “ “The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.”             Ephraim was the younger of two sons of Joseph.   His first born was Manasseh.   It was Ephraim that received the blessing of Jacob.   The tribe of Ephraim became the largest of the ten northern tribes of Israel.   Many times the Bible used the name Ephraim to represent the whole nation of Israel.             In verse 9 they are armed and carrying bows.   They are dressed, equipped, and ready to battle.   Yet we learn that they turned back in the day of battle.   The Bible identifies this as sin.   To turn back in the day of battle was displeasing to God.               To be armed meant that they were equipped with armor, a sword, and a shield. ...
