The Problem of Carnality

-->
1 Corinthians 3:1 – “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to  spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.”

A serious problem we face today is carnality.  One of the problems Paul addresses in the church of Corinth was carnality.  He writes in 1 Corinthians 3:1, “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.”  We learn in verses 3-4 this carnality had caused envy, strife, and divisions.  Verse 4 reads, “For when one says, ‘I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?’”

Donald Stamps in The Full Life Study Bible defines carnality, or what we would term as the flesh, “as the sinful element in human nature with it corrupt desires.”[i]  The Free Life Dictionary defines carnality as “the practice of finding satisfaction in activities related to fleshly desires and appetites.”[ii]

The Corinthian’s carnality kept them in infancy as believers.  1 Corinthians 3:2 says, “I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able.” Their carnality kept them from receiving a deeper revelation of the Word of God.  Carnality gets a foothold when we open the door of compromise.  We embrace carnality when we are no longer grieved by sin, when we lower our standards and no longer uphold the truth of God’s Word.

Paul outlines the problem with carnality in Corinth. It was expressed in envy, strife, and division. Envy can be defined as jealously.  Proverbs 14:30 says, “A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones.”  The second problem of carnality is strife.  Strife results from arguments and contention.  Galatians 5:21 defines strife as a work of the flesh. James 3:16 from the King James Version says, “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.”  Strife will open the door for every evil work.

The third problem with carnality is division.  Division is destructive.  The enemy seeks to divide God’s people.  Division will bring confusion.  1 Corinthians 14:33 says, “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace.” It separates people and destroys families and churches.

How do we overcome carnality?  We must crucify the flesh.  Matthew 16:24 says, “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.’” Galatians 5:24 reveals, “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

God desires to change our lives.  He longs to bless His children.  He is calling us to grow up in Him. It is time to leave the milk of the Word for the meat of the Word.  Psalms 42:7 says, “Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me.”

Rebuilding the Broken Altar of Prayer

In Matthew 21: 12-13 , “ Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’” Jesus made this declaration, “My house shall be called a house of prayer!”  I believe that God is calling us back to the altar of prayer.  For several weeks the Lord has dealt with me about rebuilding the broken altar of prayer in our personal and corporate lives.  If we are going to see spiritual breakthrough in our churches and communities then we must rebuild and return to the altar of prayer. Wayman Rogers writes, “The ministry of prayer is the most important of all ministries in the church.  Prayer creates the atmosphere and binds the powers of darkness so the gospel of Jesus can go forward and the church can prosper....

The Shout of a King is Among Them

Numbers 23:21 - “He has not observed iniquity in Jacob, Nor has He seen wickedness in Israel. The Lord his God  is  with him, And the shout of a King  is  among them.” In this passage of Scripture, the king of Moab had hired the prophet Balaam to speak a curse over the children of Israel.   He saw Israel as a threat to his kingdom.   Numbers 22:2-3 – “Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. And Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel.” When the enemy sees the people of God rising up in faith, he becomes very concerned and moves to keep us from fulfilling our assignment.   We learn in Numbers, Balaam could only speak what the Lord gave him to speak.   Instead of a curse he speaks a blessing. The enemy seeks our destruction, but God!   Listen to the conversation between God and Satan in ...

They Turned Back in the Day of Battle

Psalms 78:9 – “ “The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.”             Ephraim was the younger of two sons of Joseph.   His first born was Manasseh.   It was Ephraim that received the blessing of Jacob.   The tribe of Ephraim became the largest of the ten northern tribes of Israel.   Many times the Bible used the name Ephraim to represent the whole nation of Israel.             In verse 9 they are armed and carrying bows.   They are dressed, equipped, and ready to battle.   Yet we learn that they turned back in the day of battle.   The Bible identifies this as sin.   To turn back in the day of battle was displeasing to God.               To be armed meant that they were equipped with armor, a sword, and a shield. ...
