They Turned Back in the Day of Battle

Psalms 78:9 – ““The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.”

Ephraim was the younger of two sons of Joseph.  His first born was Manasseh.  It was Ephraim that received the blessing of Jacob.  The tribe of Ephraim became the largest of the ten northern tribes of Israel.  Many times the Bible used the name Ephraim to represent the whole nation of Israel.

In verse 9 they are armed and carrying bows.  They are dressed, equipped, and ready to battle.  Yet we learn that they turned back in the day of battle.  The Bible identifies this as sin.  To turn back in the day of battle was displeasing to God.

To be armed meant that they were equipped with armor, a sword, and a shield.  The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 6:11 to instruct us to put on the whole armor of God.  Like the children of Ephraim, we are equipped for battle. The following scriptures reveal where we are to engage the enemy:

  • Jude 1:3 instructs us to stand in opposition to false teachers.
  • Ephesians 6:12 teaches that we struggle against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual wickedness in high places.
  • 2 Timothy 4:7-18 instructs the believer to show courage in the battle.
  • 1 Peter 5:8 teaches the believer to be alert at all times.
  • Revelation 2:2 reveals that the church is to expose those who are not true apostles.

Ephraim turned back in the day of battle.  They were overcome by fear and turned away from the fight.  They did not remember the promises that God had made them.  May it never be said of us that we turned back in the day of battle.  As soldiers in the army of God we must be willing to run to the battle.

We are equipped for victory.  We have every weapon that is needed to fight this battle of faith against the enemies of God.  We can be tempted to become comfortable and turn aside from doing the will of God.  Hebrews 10:38 cautions, “Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.”  Ephraim displeased God when they turned back in the day of battle.  We must realize that God is mobilizing His last day army to reach the greatest harvest in history. We must be ready to respond to His call.

Rebuilding the Broken Altar of Prayer

In Matthew 21: 12-13 , “ Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’” Jesus made this declaration, “My house shall be called a house of prayer!”  I believe that God is calling us back to the altar of prayer.  For several weeks the Lord has dealt with me about rebuilding the broken altar of prayer in our personal and corporate lives.  If we are going to see spiritual breakthrough in our churches and communities then we must rebuild and return to the altar of prayer. Wayman Rogers writes, “The ministry of prayer is the most important of all ministries in the church.  Prayer creates the atmosphere and binds the powers of darkness so the gospel of Jesus can go forward and the church can prosper....

The Fourth Month - The Month to See

In   1 Chronicles 12:32   we learn that the Sons of Issachar had an understanding of the times and knew what Israel ought to do.  Like the sons of Issachar, we need to have an understanding of the times.  We are in a time of uncertainty and fear, therefore we need prophetic insight into what God has for us and desires to do in our lives. For some time I have been praying and asking God to give me insight into how He moves in time. The Sons of Issachar were masters of the calendar.  In  Exodus 12:2  the Lord establishes the Hebrew calendar.  “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.”  The Hebrew calendar begins at Passover.  This is the calendar that God ordained and introduced in the Bible.  To better understand how God moves in times you can study the Hebrew calendar and the patterns that have been established in the Word of God.  Our Gregorian calendar is on a differ...

The Fifth Month - Av - The Month to Hear

--> The Fifth Month – Av The Month to Hear For a number of years I have been studying and praying for insight into how the Lord moves and works in time. We learn in 1 Chronicles 12:32 that the Sons of Issachar had an understanding of the times and knew what Israel ought to do.  They were masters of the Hebrew calendar.   In Exodus 12:2 the Lord established the Hebrew calendar. “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.” The Hebrew calendar begins at Passover in the month of Nissan.  This calendar was God ordained and introduced in the Bible.   To better understand how God moves in times you can study the Hebrew calendar and the patterns that have been established in the Word of God.  Our Gregorian calendar is on a different time cycle than the Word of God. The Bible refers to the month of Av as the fifth month counting from Passover.  It corresponds to the months of ...
