The Arrow of the Lord's Deliverance

II Kings 13:15-19 – “15 And Elisha said to him, “Take a bow and some arrows.” So he took himself a bow and some arrows.  Then he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” So he put his hand on it, and Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands.  And he said, “Open the east window”; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot”; and he shot. And he said, “The arrow of the Lord’s deliverance and the arrow of deliverance from Syria; for you must strike the Syrians at Aphek till you have destroyed them.”  Then he said, “Take the arrows”; so he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground”; so he struck three times, and stopped.  And the man of God was angry with him, and said, “You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck Syria till you had destroyed it! But now you will strike Syria only three times.”

In this passage of scripture, the Prophet Elisha is close to death.  2 Kings 13:14 reads, “Elisha had become sick with the illness of which he would die.” In I Kings 19:19 the Prophet Elijah found him plowing with twelve yoke of oxen.  He cast his mantle upon him which symbolized his being anointed to succeed the prophet.  When Elijah was translated into heaven, Elisha received a double portion of the spirit of Elijah.

In this story the dying prophet is prophesying hope to the people he had loved and served.  He instructs the king to take a bow and shoot an arrow out of the east window.  Verses 16-17 reads, “Then he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” So he put his hand on it, and Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands. And he said, “Open the east window”; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot”; and he shot. And he said, “The arrow of the Lord’s deliverance and the arrow of deliverance from Syria; for you must strike the Syrians at Aphek till you have destroyed them.

Why did the prophet instruct the king to open the window and shoot an arrow eastward?  This was an act of declaring war on his enemies.  There was an ancient custom to shoot an arrow or cast a spear into the country that an army intended to invade.  The prophet was telling this king to declare war on his enemies.

The Lord has given you the same command.  You are called to conquer. You must be equipped for battle and go on the offensive.  Romans 8:37, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”  King Joash had no plans to declare war on Syria.  Syria had left his armies and armaments depleted.

This king didn’t have the will or ability to even defend himself, and now the prophet instructs him to declare war on the enemy.  How many times have you felt outnumbered and outgunned?  The enemy will intimidate you to keep you from moving forward in the will of God.

It is time to rise up and stand your ground in faith.  You must open the eastern window and shoot the arrow of the Lord’s deliverance into the enemy’s territory.  “Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.” Exercise your authority over the schemes and plans of the enemy.  Remember the words of Jesus in Luke 10:19, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

Rebuilding the Broken Altar of Prayer

In Matthew 21: 12-13 , “ Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’” Jesus made this declaration, “My house shall be called a house of prayer!”  I believe that God is calling us back to the altar of prayer.  For several weeks the Lord has dealt with me about rebuilding the broken altar of prayer in our personal and corporate lives.  If we are going to see spiritual breakthrough in our churches and communities then we must rebuild and return to the altar of prayer. Wayman Rogers writes, “The ministry of prayer is the most important of all ministries in the church.  Prayer creates the atmosphere and binds the powers of darkness so the gospel of Jesus can go forward and the church can prosper.  This is the area that

The Shout of a King is Among Them

Numbers 23:21 - “He has not observed iniquity in Jacob, Nor has He seen wickedness in Israel. The Lord his God  is  with him, And the shout of a King  is  among them.” In this passage of Scripture, the king of Moab had hired the prophet Balaam to speak a curse over the children of Israel.   He saw Israel as a threat to his kingdom.   Numbers 22:2-3 – “Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. And Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel.” When the enemy sees the people of God rising up in faith, he becomes very concerned and moves to keep us from fulfilling our assignment.   We learn in Numbers, Balaam could only speak what the Lord gave him to speak.   Instead of a curse he speaks a blessing. The enemy seeks our destruction, but God!   Listen to the conversation between God and Satan in Job 1:8-10, “Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you conside

They Turned Back in the Day of Battle

Psalms 78:9 – “ “The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.”             Ephraim was the younger of two sons of Joseph.   His first born was Manasseh.   It was Ephraim that received the blessing of Jacob.   The tribe of Ephraim became the largest of the ten northern tribes of Israel.   Many times the Bible used the name Ephraim to represent the whole nation of Israel.             In verse 9 they are armed and carrying bows.   They are dressed, equipped, and ready to battle.   Yet we learn that they turned back in the day of battle.   The Bible identifies this as sin.   To turn back in the day of battle was displeasing to God.               To be armed meant that they were equipped with armor, a sword, and a shield.   The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 6:11 to instruct us to put on the whole armor of God.   Like the children of Ephraim, we are equipped for battle. The following scriptures reveal where we are to engage the e
