Acts 1:8 – “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Each of us are called by God to be witnesses of His grace and goodness. We can share what God has done in our lives. We can share how God saved us. We can tell others about our own experiences with His love and grace.
John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.“ “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” If we believe these scriptures are true and it is God’s will to save those who are lost, then we have a responsibility to share our faith with those who do not know the Lord.
How will they hear if we don’t share? Romans 10:14-15 says, “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”
We have gotten it wrong in the church today. We believe it is up to the pastor and ministerial staff to all the witnessing and evangelism. Why is this? Because we have been taught that there is a separation between the clergy and laity. This is not scriptural.
There are five ministry offices for the purpose of equipping the saints for the work of the ministry. One of the five from Ephesians 4 is the evangelist. An evangelist is a soul-winner. There are those in the Body of Christ who have the gift of evangelism. They have a strong desire to win people to Christ. We need these people, but here is where we get it wrong. We rely on these who have the gift of evangelism to do all the soul winning.
Everyone is not called to be an evangelist, but we are all called to be witnesses. When Jesus was about to ascend back to the Father He spoke His final words. A man’s final words are important. Luke records His final words in Acts 1:8, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” We are called to be witnesses of God’s redeeming power to our family members and friends, to our city, state, and to the nations of the earth.
