Romans 12:1-2 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
We learn in our study of this passage that we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. Transformation in biblical terms is defined in the following ways:
- A spiritual metamorphosis. This is a complete transformation brought about by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- This process involves a believer moving from a carnal lifestyle to Spirit-led holiness. Romans 8:6-7 emphasizes that being carnal-minded is death, while being spiritually minded is life and peace. The carnal mind is enmity against God because it is not subject to the law of God.
- A shift from self-centeredness to Christ-centeredness is marked by the renewal of the mind and surrender of the body. In Romans 12:1, the Apostle encourages believers to give their bodies to God as a living and holy sacrifice.
If we are going to experience transformation, we must completely surrender our hears and mind to God. We are not transformed by our own efforts. It is a divine work of the Holy Spirit. The Christian life is not lived out by obeying rules and doing good works but is only lived out through the power of the Holy Spirit. What does it mean to be completely surrendered to the Holy Spirit?
In our text we are encouraged to “give our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God.” This is an act of true worship. Worship involves giving and sacrifice. (1) In Galatians 2:20 Paul writes, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” This passage reveals that our true identity is found in surrendering to the Lord.
In Luke 9:23 Jesus says, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” This is an invitation to take up the cross each and every day. Surrender is not a one-time act but a daily commitment to walk in His ways and follow Jesus with our whole heart.
