John 1:7 – “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us
from all sin.”
In
the church I attended growing up, we frequently sang a beautiful hymn entitled,
Nothing but the blood. It begins with a question, “What can wash
away my sin?” and then answers, “Nothing but the blood of Jesus.” People are asking the same question today,
“What can wash away my sin. In Jeremiah 2:22 the Prophet writes, “’Although you
wash yourself with soap and use an abundance of cleansing powder, the
stain of your guilt is still before me,’ declares the Sovereign Lord”
(NIV).
Sin results in condemnation, guilt, and
shame. When Adam sinned, he was ashamed. We learn in Genesis 3:10, he hid from
the Lord because he was naked and afraid. Jesus came to liberate us from the
yoke and bondage of sin. He gives an invitation in Matthew 11:29-30 for those
who are weary, to “take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and
lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy
and My burden is light.”
What
is the remedy for our sins? The blood of
Jesus. Revelation 1:5 reads, “and from
Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler
over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our
sins in His own blood.” The Apostle Paul
writes in Colossians 1:14, “in whom we have redemption through His
blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
The
precious blood of Jesus has the power to transform the sinner into a saint.
Hebrews 9:14 gives us a glimpse of that power, “how much more shall the blood
of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to
God, cleanse your conscience from dead works
to serve the living God?
How
do we experience this cleansing? How do
we enter into this promised freedom? The
answer is found in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
There is cleansing power available through the blood of Jesus for those
who are willing to confess and forsake their sins.
