II Corinthians
10:4
– “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down
strongholds.”
When
we seek to advance the kingdom, we will encounter opposition. The Apostle Paul wrote these words in 1 Timothy
6:12 to a young son in the faith concerning this opposition, “Fight the good
fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and
have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
There are
powerful weapons available to the believer.
We have the weapon of prayer. Isaiah
58:9 says, “Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall
cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you take away the yoke from
your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness.”
One of the most
effective weapons the believer has at his/her disposal is found in James 4:7,
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” The Christian can best resist the devil in
the following ways:
- We must not be unaware of how the enemy attacks the people of God. II Corinthians 2:11 says, “Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
- We must remain vigilant in guarding against the attacks of Satan. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
- We must put on the whole armor of God. Ephesians 6:11-17 says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
The Apostle Peter
wrote in 1 Peter 5:8-9, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the
devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist
him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced
by your brotherhood in the world.” One of the most effective weapons in
the believer’s arsenal is the indwelling Holy Spirit. Rev. John B. Todd
describes this as being “filled with inside information.” Dr. Chuck Pierce
writes, “The indwelling Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus living in the hearts of
His people, sent to give them new hope, new love, new peace, new joy and new
direction.”[1]
