Hebrews 1:14 - “Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits
sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.” NLT
The
subject of angels is a fascinating study in the Word of God. When God initiates a new day or new order
there will be angelic activity. One sign of revival and restoration are
testimonies of angelic activity. God
uses angels to carry out His plans on the earth. Martin Luther writes, “An
angel is a spiritual creature created by God without a body, for the service of
Christendom and of the church.”[i]
Angels
are divine messengers. There is an angelic announcement in the first chapter of
the Gospel of Luke. A priest named
Zacharias met an angel as he was ministering in the temple. We learn in Luke 1:19 that this angel is
Gabriel who stands in the presence of God.
He came to announce the birth of John the Baptist, who would prepare the
way of the Lord.
It
was Gabriel who announced the birth of the Messiah. Listen to the conversation
in Luke 1:30-33, “Then the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you
have found favor with God. And behold, you will
conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His
name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the
Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And
He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be
no end.’” In Luke 2:8-20 angels came and announced the birth of Jesus to
shepherds who were keeping watch over their flocks at night.
Angels are
ministers who minister to the heirs of salvation. Terry Law writes in his book,
Everyone’s Guide to Angels, “Angelic
visits always had a purpose, and they brought people closer to God and His plan
for them.”[ii]
Angels are involved in protecting God’s people. The Psalmist wrote, “The
angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and
delivers them (Psalms 34:7).” An angel shut the mouth of lions when Daniel was
cast into the lion’s den. God uses
angels as servants to carry out His plans in the earth.
