Isaiah 9:6 – “For
unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be
upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty
God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
The
Prophet Isaiah is referred to as “The Messianic Prophet.” He recorded many
prophetic promises concerning the coming Messiah. It is Isaiah who writes, “Therefore the Lord
Himself shall give you a sign; behold, the virgin shall conceive, and bear a
son, and shall call his name Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14). He writes prophetically of His mission, His
rejection by His own people, His sacrificial suffering, and His kingdom.
He
reveals His name shall be called Wonderful. In Judges 13 the Angel of the Lord
appeared to Manoah and his wife. He told
them they would have a son and he would be a Nazarite and begin to deliver the
Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
In verse 17 Manoah asked the Angel of the Lord, “What is your name?” He
answers in verse 18, “It is wonderful.” The
Spirit Filled Life Bible Commentary Notes read, “It is wonderful is an
expression meaning ‘beyond understanding.’”[i]
Isaiah
declares that our Messiah is Wonderful. He is the Wonderful Counselor, the
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. The word “wonderful” comes from a Hebrew word
meaning, “a miracle, a marvelous thing.”[ii] He is the miracle worker. The four Gospels give record of His miracles during
His earthly ministry:
·
He
opened blind eyes and gave sight to the blind (Mark 10:46-52)
·
He
opened deaf ears (Mark 7:32-35)
·
He
cleansed the lepers (Matthew 11:5)
·
He
made the lame to walk (Matthew 11:5)
·
He
raised a widow’s son from the dead (Luke 7:11-17)
·
He
fed a multitude with five loaves and two fish (Matthew 14:13-21)
Jesus’s
ministry is filled with miracles. The Apostle John wrote these words in the
Gospel that bears His name, “And there are also many other things that Jesus
did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world
itself could not contain the books that would be written” (John 21:25). When we study the wonderful miracles
recorded on the pages of scripture we are amazed at His power and declare with
Isaiah, “His name shall be called Wonderful.”
He still works miracles today. He
is the healer and He alone brings those in captivity’s bondage to freedom.
