The Tithe is Holy

Leviticus 27:30 – “And all the tithe of the land,  whether  of the seed of the land  or  of the fruit of the tree,  is  the Lord’s. It  is  holy to the Lord.” The tithe is holy to the Lord.   This is the portion of our income God requires us to return to Him.   Some would argue the tithe was only under the law of Moses.   In Genesis 14:20 Abraham tithes to Melchizedek some six-hundred years before God gave the law to Moses.   We must be careful not to mishandle holy things.             In Genesis 28:10-22 Jacob stops in Luz and sleeps on his journey.   He dreams of a ladder with its top reaching into heaven.   There are angels ascending and descending the latter.   At the top of this ladder was the Lord. He identifies Himself as the God of Abraham, and Isaac. He identifies Himself as the Covenant God of Jacob’s fathers...

The Rock of Remembrance

Joshua 4:5-7- “And Joshua said to them: “Cross over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, that this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.” When the Jewish people visit the grave of a loved-one, they have a unique custom.   They leave a small stone on the grave marker.   This is called the rock or stone of remembrance.   This probably dates back to ancient times when a pile of stones would have been the grave marker.   The stone is left on the grave to show it has been visited ...

Right vs. Wrong Ways to Give

Matthew 6:21 – “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” There are over 2,000 verses in the Bible dealing with money and possessions.   The Scriptures teach us there are both right ways and wrong ways to give.   The Apostle Paul instructs us about what the attitude of our heart should be when we give in II Corinthians 9:7, “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”             We give out of obedience and as an act of worship.   One of the highest expressions of worship available to the believer is the act of giving of our tithe and offering to the Lord.   Isaiah 1:19 says, “If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.” The Psalmist writes in Psalms 37:5, “Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” Secondly, we are to give in expectant ...
