Psalm 24:1-2 – “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the waters.”
Psalm 24 is the third part of a trilogy with Psalm 22 and 23. David opens Psalm 22 prophetically with the words Jesus would say on the cross, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning?” Psalm 23 reveals our Lord as the Great Shepherd who cares for His sheep. Psalm 24 reveals the Lord as the King of Glory.
Psalm 24 begins with a declaration of ownership. The Psalmist identifies the Lord as the Creator. Psalm 24:2 says, “He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters. Psalm 89:11 says, “The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all its fullness, You have founded them.”
The beginning of creation is recorded in Genesis 1:1-2, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Tony Evans writes, “Most ancient creation accounts chronicle a struggle between good and evil, with earth popping up as an accidental by-product of struggle. In these accounts, the gods who created the world did so out of prior material. They could not truly create. Scripture’s story is different: In the beginning God (Elohim, the Supreme One) created out of nothing. With a mere word he made the entire universe of time, space, and matter—negating any possibility of atheistic evolution.[I]
Who is this King of glory? He is the One who possesses the title deed of creation. Revelation 5:1 says, “And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals.” Warren Wiersbe writes in his book, Be Victorious, “The seven sealed scroll represents Christ’s title deed to all that the Father promised Him because of His sacrifice on the cross.”[ii] Psalms 2:8 says, “Ask of Me and I will give you the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.” Hebrews 1:2 declares, “He is the heir of all things.”
David Gizik writes, “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness: It wasn’t enough for David to say that the entire earth belonged to the LORD; he added that all its fullness also belonged to Him. It’s difficult to think of a more sweeping statement of God’s ownership.[iii] Charles Spurgeon says, “The ‘fulness’ of the earth may mean its harvests, its wealth, its life, or its worship; in all these senses the Most High God is Possessor of all. The earth is full of God; he made it full, and he keeps it full.”
