Hebrews 12:29 – “For our God is a consuming fire.”
The Passion Translation says, “For our God is a holy devouring fire.” When God appears it is usually associated with fire. The fire represents God’s presence. Moses encountered the fire of God’s presence on the mountain in the wilderness. Exodus 3:2 says, “2 And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed.”
In Genesis 15:17 God appeared to Abraham as a flaming torch. In Exodus 16 He appeared to Israel as a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. This pillar of fire had a two-fold purpose. First, it provided heat for the cold nights in the wilderness. Second, it provided light in the darkness. The presence of God will warm you in a harsh cold world. John 16:33 says, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
When Moses and the children of Israel received the Law on Mount Sinai in Exodus 15:17 fire and smoke appeared to describe His divine presence. Jeremiah experienced a divine call from God and declared “It is like a fire shut up in my bones.” Fire represents passion. God desires to impart a new passion in you.
When we experience the fire of God’s presence He will give us a new passion for His holiness. Joshua 3:5 says, “And Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” He will give us a new passion for His word. Psalms 119:11 says, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” He will give us a new passion for true worship. John 4:24 says, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” When we experience the fire of God’s presence we will never be the same.
