Overcoming the Dangerous Spirit of Apathy

1 Corinthians 16:9 – “For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.”

How do we move forward in our walk and faith and experience the fulfillment of the many promises God has made to us?  We have to overcome the adversaries who oppose us at the door of our breakthrough.  We have an enemy that threatens us.  This is a dangerous enemy.  It threatens our growth in grace. This enemy must be overcome by every believer.  What is the enemy that seeks to impede our walk of faith?  It is the enemy of apathy.

Apathy is defined as “absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement, lack of interest in or concern for things that others find moving or exciting.”[i] I would also define apathy as the absence of joy.  Nehemiah 8:10 says, “the joy of the Lord is our strength.”  Apathy will rob the believer of strength.  This is one reason the enemy attacks our worship.  The Psalmist writes in Psalms 98:4, “Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.”

What does the Bible say about apathy?  There are numerous Scriptures that address this enemy:
  • Romans 12:11 – “not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;”
  • 2 Timothy 4:3-4 – “For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.”
  • Proverbs 15:19 – “The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns, But the way of the upright is a highway.”
  • James 4:17 – “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
  • Galatians 6:9 – “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”

It is time to overcome and break the power of apathy. We must not allow the spirit of the age, the prosperity of our day, or anything to distract us from who God called us to be.  Isaiah 61:3 says, “To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

Rebuilding the Broken Altar of Prayer

In Matthew 21: 12-13 , “ Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’” Jesus made this declaration, “My house shall be called a house of prayer!”  I believe that God is calling us back to the altar of prayer.  For several weeks the Lord has dealt with me about rebuilding the broken altar of prayer in our personal and corporate lives.  If we are going to see spiritual breakthrough in our churches and communities then we must rebuild and return to the altar of prayer. Wayman Rogers writes, “The ministry of prayer is the most important of all ministries in the church.  Prayer creates the atmosphere and binds the powers of darkness so the gospel of Jesus can go forward and the church can prosper....

The Fourth Month - The Month to See

In   1 Chronicles 12:32   we learn that the Sons of Issachar had an understanding of the times and knew what Israel ought to do.  Like the sons of Issachar, we need to have an understanding of the times.  We are in a time of uncertainty and fear, therefore we need prophetic insight into what God has for us and desires to do in our lives. For some time I have been praying and asking God to give me insight into how He moves in time. The Sons of Issachar were masters of the calendar.  In  Exodus 12:2  the Lord establishes the Hebrew calendar.  “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.”  The Hebrew calendar begins at Passover.  This is the calendar that God ordained and introduced in the Bible.  To better understand how God moves in times you can study the Hebrew calendar and the patterns that have been established in the Word of God.  Our Gregorian calendar is on a differ...

The Fifth Month - Av - The Month to Hear

--> The Fifth Month – Av The Month to Hear For a number of years I have been studying and praying for insight into how the Lord moves and works in time. We learn in 1 Chronicles 12:32 that the Sons of Issachar had an understanding of the times and knew what Israel ought to do.  They were masters of the Hebrew calendar.   In Exodus 12:2 the Lord established the Hebrew calendar. “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.” The Hebrew calendar begins at Passover in the month of Nissan.  This calendar was God ordained and introduced in the Bible.   To better understand how God moves in times you can study the Hebrew calendar and the patterns that have been established in the Word of God.  Our Gregorian calendar is on a different time cycle than the Word of God. The Bible refers to the month of Av as the fifth month counting from Passover.  It corresponds to the months of ...
