Jesus Breaks Every Fetter

Mark 5:2 – ““And when he had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.”

In the fifth chapter of Mark we are introduced to a man possessed with unclean spirits.  As we study this chapter we learn that this man was tormented day and night.  He cut himself with stones and lived among the tombs in the place of death.  The town officials didn’t know how to handle him.  They bound him with chains and fetters.  A fetter is simply a shackle designed for the feet.

Verse 4 reveals that he often broke the chains and the shackles and that nobody could tame him.  In verse 6 when he saw Jesus he ran and worshipped him.  In verse 7 he cried out with a loud voice.  I believe this was a cry of desperation.  In verse 8 Jesus simply addresses the demons, “Come out of this man.”

This tormented man lived in dire straits.  He was separated from his family and living in a graveyard like a wild man. He was a threat to the population and to himself.  He had no quality of life.  He had very little hope, but his life was about to forever change.  You see what man could not do.  What the doctors and medication of that day could not cure.  The problem that the town’s authorities could not solve was about to change.

This man who had been condemned by world and conquered by sin was about to have a life changing encounter with the Son of God.  In Mark 4:35 Jesus told His disciples, “Let us cross over to the other side.”  I believe He heard the cry of the one who was bound with chains and shackles.  He had an appointment to work the impossible.

This man was bound by a legion of demons.  What happened when Jesus commanded these demons to leave?  This tormented man was set totally free.  Jesus breaks every chain of bondage and sets the captive free.  In Mark 5:15 says that this man was clothed, sitting and talking to Jesus, and in his right mind.

This man represents broken humanity.  He represents those who are in bondage.  What is the remedy for bondage?  An encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ.  He breaks every chain.  He alone can remove every shackle.  Janie West Metzger wrote a beautiful song in 1927 titled, “Jesus Breaks Every Fetter.”  It is an old song, but still a very relevant message for today.

            The lyrics are as follows:
Verse One:
I am now on the altar....I am now on the altar....
      I am now...on the altar...which was made for....me
      The Chorus:
      JESUS BREAKS....EVERY FETTER.....
      JESUS BREAKS....EVERY FETTER.....
      JESUS BREAKS....EVERY FETTER.....
      AND HE SETS....ME FREE....
       Verse Two:
I will ne'er doubt my Savior...I will ne'er doubt my Savior....
I will ne'er doubt my Savior...For He cleanses me.....
      Repeat The Chorus
      JESUS BREAKS....EVERY FETTER.....
      JESUS BREAKS....EVERY FETTER.....
      JESUS BREAKS....EVERY FETTER.....
      AND HE SETS....ME FREE...
       Verse Three:
I will rest on His promise....I will rest on His promise...
I will rest on His promise...Which He gave to me......
       Verse Four:
I will shout Hallelujah!....I will shout Hallelujah....
I will shout Hallelujah...for He sets me free......

Rebuilding the Broken Altar of Prayer

In Matthew 21: 12-13 , “ Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’” Jesus made this declaration, “My house shall be called a house of prayer!”  I believe that God is calling us back to the altar of prayer.  For several weeks the Lord has dealt with me about rebuilding the broken altar of prayer in our personal and corporate lives.  If we are going to see spiritual breakthrough in our churches and communities then we must rebuild and return to the altar of prayer. Wayman Rogers writes, “The ministry of prayer is the most important of all ministries in the church.  Prayer creates the atmosphere and binds the powers of darkness so the gospel of Jesus can go forward and the church can prosper....

The Shout of a King is Among Them

Numbers 23:21 - “He has not observed iniquity in Jacob, Nor has He seen wickedness in Israel. The Lord his God  is  with him, And the shout of a King  is  among them.” In this passage of Scripture, the king of Moab had hired the prophet Balaam to speak a curse over the children of Israel.   He saw Israel as a threat to his kingdom.   Numbers 22:2-3 – “Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. And Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel.” When the enemy sees the people of God rising up in faith, he becomes very concerned and moves to keep us from fulfilling our assignment.   We learn in Numbers, Balaam could only speak what the Lord gave him to speak.   Instead of a curse he speaks a blessing. The enemy seeks our destruction, but God!   Listen to the conversation between God and Satan in ...

They Turned Back in the Day of Battle

Psalms 78:9 – “ “The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.”             Ephraim was the younger of two sons of Joseph.   His first born was Manasseh.   It was Ephraim that received the blessing of Jacob.   The tribe of Ephraim became the largest of the ten northern tribes of Israel.   Many times the Bible used the name Ephraim to represent the whole nation of Israel.             In verse 9 they are armed and carrying bows.   They are dressed, equipped, and ready to battle.   Yet we learn that they turned back in the day of battle.   The Bible identifies this as sin.   To turn back in the day of battle was displeasing to God.               To be armed meant that they were equipped with armor, a sword, and a shield. ...
