Revelation 4:2-11 – “Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
“Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!”
Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:
“You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power;
For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”
We live in chaotic times. Wars and rumors of wars, famine, pestilence, persecution, and violence are headline news in the media. There have been two assassination attempts against President Donald Trump. We are in a time of intense shaking. Our own hometown is cleaning up the damage of Hurricane Helene. Haggai 2:6-8 says, “For thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ says the Lord of hosts.”
As believers we are part of a kingdom which cannot be shaken. Hebrews 12:28-29 says, “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.” When the world around us is in fear, we will not be afraid. Psalms 56:3 says, Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.” When the world is confused, we will not be confused. I Corinthians 14:33 says, “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.”
There is an unshakable throne in a turbulent world. We learn in Revelation 4:2, “Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.” The throne of God is an unshakable throne. King Charles sits on the throne of the United Kingdom. He is not an absolute monarch, but there are constitutional limits to his powers. We often read and hear news reports about the monarchy being in crisis.
The Romanovs reigned over Russia for approximately 300 years. This dynasty ended when Tzar Nicholas abdicated and was brutally executed along with his family by the Bolsheviks. There are many other thrones we could mention. They are fragile and temporary and many of them have constitutional limits.
The throne of God is not in crisis. Psalms 45:6 says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.” It is a throne of grace and power. Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Grace, salvation, forgiveness, and deliverance are currently flowing from God’s throne.
