Hebrews 8:6 – “But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.”
We learn in our study of Hebrews that we have a better covenant which was established on better promises. Hebrews 7:22 says, “By so much more Jesus has become the surety of a better covenant.” The New Covenant is superior to the Old Covenant. Jesus is the mediator of better covenant which was established on better promises.
2 Peter 1:4 calls these promises, “exceedingly great and precious promises.” We can trust God to keep His promises because they are sealed by the highest authority, His Word. Jeremiah 1:12 from the NIV says, “The Lord said to me, You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that word is fulfilled.”
We can trust God to keep His promises because of His character. Psalms 18:30 says, “As for God, his way is perfect: The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.” We trust God to keep His promises because He never changes. Malachi 3:6 says, “I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob are not destroyed.”
What are these better promises? The following are just a few of the promises we have through our covenant relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ:
We have the promise of salvation. Hebrews 7:25 –says, “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”
We have the promise of assurance of salvation. Jude 1:24 – “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,”
We have the promise of power over sin. Romans 6:14 says, ““For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
We have the promise of power over fear and anxiety. II Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
We have the promise of the power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives. Acts 1:8 says, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
We have the promise of power over the enemy of our souls. Luke 10:19 says,
We have the promise of provision. Philippians 4:19 says, Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
We have the promise of peace with God. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in Your.”
We have the promise of true freedom. John 8:36 says, “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
We have the promise of protection. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 –says, “But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.”
We have the promise of divine healing. 1 Peter 2;24 says, “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.”
There are many more promises to the believer in the Word of God. We have a better covenant established on better promises.
