Lamentations 3:21-24 – “This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘Therefore I hope in Him!’”
The mercy of God is an inexhaustible fountain that flows freely and abundantly. The Prophet Jeremiah writes in Lamentations 3:22, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.” We become recipients of this mercy when we pray and receive the miracle of salvation. Psalms 27:1 says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?”
The prophet continues in Lamentations 3:23, “They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” His mercy never expires. There is no expiration date on God’s mercy. Psalms 86:5 says, “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.” Billy Graham writes, “There is not a flower that opens, not a seed that falls into the ground, and not an ear of wheat that nods on the end of its stalk in the wind that does not preach and proclaim the greatness and the mercy of God to the whole world.”
Jesus demonstrated His mercy on the cross. Listen to His words to the Father in Luke 23:34, “Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” In Ephesians 2:4 we learn that God is rich in mercy. The Psalmist writes in Psalms 36:5, “Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.”
Jesus was crucified between two criminals who were also sentenced to death. Luke 23:38 says, “Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” The second criminal rebuked the first. His words are recorded Luke 23:40-42, “’Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said to Jesus, ‘Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.’” In Luke 23:43 Jesus extends His mercy, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Psalms 23:6 says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.” The God we love and serve is a God of mercy and grace.
