Psalms 24:8-10 – “Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah”
The Twenty-fourth Psalm speaks of the King of Glory and His Kingdom. This King is identified as “the Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.” He is not just a king among other kings, but He is “King of Kings and Lord of Lords” (Revelation 19:16). He has no limitations. He has unlimited authority. Matthew 28:18 says, “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Who is this King of Glory? He is the soon coming King of Glory. Two angels speak prophetically of the soon coming of the Lord in Acts 1:10-11, “And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.’”
Warren Wiersbe writes in his book, Be Worshipful, “Five times in this text God is called the King of Glory. Jesus is the Chief Shepherd who will one day return in glory and give each faithful servant a crown of glory.”[1] I Peter 5:4 says, “and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.” When we study the second coming of our Lord we discover there are two phases of His coming. The first phase is what we refer to as the rapture of the church. The Apostle Paul reveals this in I Thessalonians 4:13-18. The rapture is when Christ comes for His saints. His feet will not actually touch the earth, but He will come in the clouds to resurrect those who have died in the faith and then catch away those who are alive and remain.
The Apostle Paul writes about the first phase of the second coming in 1 Corinthians 15:51-53, “Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
The second phase of His coming is called the revelation. This is described in Revelation 19:11-14, “Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.” Who is this King of Glory? He is our soon coming King.
