John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
In our culture we celebrate Christmas by exchanging gifts. We work hard to find the right gifts for the ones we love. We struggle to find the right gift for the person who has everything. What kind of gift can I get that will be pleasing to my spouse?
One of the busiest days of the Christmas shopping season is December 26. That’s when we exchange the gifts that didn’t fit, or we didn’t really like. There is a gift you will love. It is a gift you will never exchange. It was and is the greatest gift of all. This gift was sent in the form of a human baby.
Philippians 2:5-8 says, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
This baby was born to a young Jewish virgin. Her name was Mary. He was born in the village of Bethlehem. In Matthew 1:21 there is an angelic announcement about this gift from heaven wrapped in the form humanity. Matthew 1:21 says, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Christmas is about the greatest gift of all gifts. Christmas is about the Christ child, the Messiah. Christmas is about long prophesied Jewish Messiah. This gift is wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. When Mary and Joseph looked into the cradle, they were looking at more than just a baby, they were looking into the face of God. John 14:9 says, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”
Christmas is about a Savior. He came to reconcile us to God from sin’s estrangement. Jesus is the greatest gift known to mankind. He came to give us life and allow us to live life to the fullest measure. John 10:10 says, “I am come that you may have life, and have it more abundantly.” A life filled with an abundance of joy, an abundance of peace, and an abundance of love.
