Genesis 1:1-5 – “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.”
God spoke the world into existence. Hebrews 11:3 says, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” Throughout the first chapter of Genesis it reads, “Then God said.” Psalms 33:6-7 says, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deep in storehouses.”
There is power in our words. Faith and speech go together. We must learn to speak our faith. This is the season to learn to speak the Word of God over every circumstance in our lives. We are defined by what you speak. Matthew 15:18 records the words of Jesus, “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.” Our words give expression to our faith. Faith is a product of our spirit man. This is also defined as the hidden man of the heart in the Scriptures. Proverbs 4:23 instructs us to “guard our hearts with all diligence.”
Our words are powerful. Proverbs 18:21 says, “death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Jesus reveals in Matthew 12:37, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” As believers our words should be holy, wholesome, and healing. The Psalmist writes in Psalms 141:3, “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips."
We must watch over our words. Our words have the ability to heal or wound. Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes 5:2-3, “Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and you on earth; therefore let your words be few. For a dream comes through much activity, and a fool’s voice is known by his many words.” We must be careful to watch over our words.
