Proverbs 29:18 – “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”
The Prophet Habakkuk writes to encourage us to “write the vision and make it plain” (Habakkuk 2:2). This is a time to allow the Lord to clarify our vision. The word vision in Proverbs 29:18 can be translated as revelation. The Passion Translation says, “When there is no clear prophetic vision, people quickly wander astray.”
In Acts 26:19 the Apostle Paul told King Agrippa “I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.” Paul’s calling was to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to Gentile nations of the earth. He was faithful to carry out God’s plan for his life and ministry. We are a visionary people. Without prophetic revelation we will perish.
We must allow the Holy Spirit to chart our course for the future. God has a wonderful future for His people. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” What is your vision? What promise are you carrying in your heart? Perhaps you dream of starting a new business, or a new ministry. Perhaps you dream of being a teacher or working in healthcare.
Dr. Owen Weston defines vision as “a statement of where you’re going and how you are going to get there.” A vision is a prophetic revelation of the heart of God. The Apostle Peter gives us a glimpse in the heart of God in II Peter 3:9, “God is not willing that any should perish, but that all come to repentance.”
The Lord has already been in our tomorrow. He has already mapped out our next destination. Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Frank Damazio writes in his book, Strategic Vision, “A clearly stated vision is the compass in the hands of a great vision leader.” He continues, “Vision is the clear sense of direction that keeps you going, even when you can’t see everything, and fog surrounds you. Vision stays the course.”[1]
