Psalms 13:5-6 – “But I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me.”
The God we love is a God of mercy. It is because of His mercy we know Him and love Him. The Apostle John writes in 1 John 4:19, “We love Him because He first loved us.” Exodus 34:7 says, “keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.”
The Lord spoke these words to Moses when He revealed Himself to Him on Mount Sinai in Exodus 34:6, “And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, the Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.” When you experience salvation, you become a recipient of the mercy of God. The following Scriptures give a description of the mercy of God:
· Psalms 25:6 says, “God’s mercy is tender.”
· In Isaiah 54:7 says, “God’s mercy is great.”
· Isaiah 55:3 says, “God’s mercy is sure.”
· Ephesians 2:4 says, “God is rich in mercy.”
Mercy is defined as, “The aspect of God’s love that causes Him to help the needy or those in miserable, rejected or unfortunate situations just as grace is the aspect of His love that moves Him to forgive the guilty. Those who are miserable may be so either because of breaking God’s law or because of circumstances beyond their control.”[i]
In the small Old Testament book of Lamentations, the prophet Jeremiah writes these words that centuries later would inspire Martin Luther to write the great Hymn, Great is Thy Faithfulness. “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassion’s fail not. They are new every morning; Great is thy faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).
God is a merciful God. 1 Peter 1:3 reads, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” The Apostle Paul writes in Titus 3:5, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.”

Amen
