Hebrews 12:1 –
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with
endurance the race that is set before us.”
On
a recent ministry trip to London, England we frequently used the Tube, London’s
Underground Transportation, to travel throughout the city. At each stop when the train came into the
station an announcement was made to “mind
the gap between the train and the platform.” This iconic phrase is synonymous with London
and is found in throughout the city on t-shirts, memorabilia, and sold as souvenirs.
To
mind the gap means to watch your
step. As believers we have to watch our steps.
Hebrews 12:1 in the New Living Translation reads, “Let us strip off
every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up.
And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” We must mind the gap.
In
our study of the Scriptures we learn our Christian walk is a walk of faith. The
Apostle Paul penned these words in 2 Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith,
not by sight.” In the New Testament we
are instructed to allow the Holy Spirit to direct our footsteps in this journey
of faith. The Bible gives the following
instructions about our steps:
- The Psalmist writes in Psalms 37:23, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.”
- In Psalms 119:113 we learn our steps are directed by the Word of God.
- Proverbs 4:12 reads, “When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, and when you run, you will not stumble.”
- Proverbs 16:9 teaches, “The Lord directs our steps.”
We must be
careful where we place our feet. We must
mind the gap. Listen to the words of David in 2 Samuel
22:37, “You enlarged my path under me; so my feet did not slip.” Psalms 18:33 reads, “He makes my feet like
the feet of deer, and sets me on high places.”
We must allow the Lord to direct our steps and lead us in paths of
righteousness for His name’s sake.
Remember to mind the gap.
