Psalms 141:3 -
"Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my
lips."
The Bible teaches
our speech should be holy. The righteous
will glorify God in their speech. Our
words are to be wholesome, holy, and filled with wisdom. Psalms 34:1 reads, “I will bless the Lord at
all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth."
We learn in our
study of the Bible we are to avoid speech that is harsh. Harsh words are cruel words. Words that inflict pain. Revelation 12:11 reveals that the enemy is an
accuser of the brethren and uses harsh words against the believer. Words are a window into the heart of
man. Jesus taught in Matthew 12:34, “For
out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
The Apostle James
gives good advice about watching over our words. He writes in James 1:19, “Therefore, my
beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to
wrath.” Too much talk can lead to
sin. Proverbs 10:19 reads, “In the
multitude of words sin is not lacking,
but he who restrains his lips is wise.”
but he who restrains his lips is wise.”
We should be
people of few words, and our words should be words of life and not words of
death. Are your words encouraging? Do you use your words to build up or tear
others down? The Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “Let no corrupt
communication proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification,
that it may impart grace to the hearer” (Ephesians 4:29).
God is calling
His people to use our words to heal. We
live in a world that is void of hope. We
can change our environment simply by learning to watch over our words. We must discipline ourselves to speak words
of life into the different circumstances and situations that we face in our
walk of faith. In Proverbs 15:1 Solomon
writes, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Our words must be filled with faith. Words of hope will bless and bring
encouragement to those God places on our path.
