Entering into Your Promised Possession

Entering into Your Promised Possession
Joshua 1:1-8

We are living in an interesting time.  We are in a time of economic uncertainty and things are changing around us rapidly in our nation and world.  Like the children of Israel you have a promised inheritance.  I believe it is time to leave the wilderness and enter into your promised inheritance.

In Numbers 13 we learn that Israel was poised to enter into the land that God had promised to children of Israel.  Moses sent twelve spies in to spy out the land.  Ten of the twelve spies came back with an evil report and two of the twelve returned with a good report.  Listen to the words of Caleb in Numbers 13:30, “Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.'"    The children of Israel believed the bad report and never entered into their promised inheritance.  I must caution you today that when you get ready to possess your promised inheritance there will be walled cities, opposing enemies, and giants to overcome.

The Old Testament book of Joshua is a good model for moving into your promised possession.  Joshua was a transformational leader.  He was taught and prepared for leadership by Moses.  In Joshua 1:1-3 there are instructions for Joshua.  “After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: 2 “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.”

The first words to Joshua are “Moses my servant is dead.”  What does this mean?  The Lord was not dishonoring Moses or what he had accomplished, but was instructing Joshua that this represented the closing of an era.  It is the passing of the baton. It represented an opening of a new time span with specific purposes of God.

Moses is dead simply means that there is no turning back, no returning to the wilderness, that business as usual is dead, therefore we must pack up and move on.  As you move into your promised inheritance we may have to leave some things behind.

One thing that you will have to do is to examine your relationships, and your connections.  Your connections will determine your future.  We must be connected to the right people.  Who are you connected to?  Who are you in relationship with?  Who are the authority figures in your life?

It is important who whispers in your ears.  You will become like those you allow to have the greatest influence in your life. There are three things to consider that will help you determine your relationships:

  1. I become what I connect to.
  2. If I am connected to sinners I will usually get pulled down and talked into compromising my convictions.
  3. We must be connected to relationships that are born of the Spirit.
Let me encourage you to pray about the relationships that God will bring into your life to encourage and bless you in this new season.

Rebuilding the Broken Altar of Prayer

In Matthew 21: 12-13 , “ Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’” Jesus made this declaration, “My house shall be called a house of prayer!”  I believe that God is calling us back to the altar of prayer.  For several weeks the Lord has dealt with me about rebuilding the broken altar of prayer in our personal and corporate lives.  If we are going to see spiritual breakthrough in our churches and communities then we must rebuild and return to the altar of prayer. Wayman Rogers writes, “The ministry of prayer is the most important of all ministries in the church.  Prayer creates the atmosphere and binds the powers of darkness so the gospel of Jesus can go forward and the church can prosper....

The Shout of a King is Among Them

Numbers 23:21 - “He has not observed iniquity in Jacob, Nor has He seen wickedness in Israel. The Lord his God  is  with him, And the shout of a King  is  among them.” In this passage of Scripture, the king of Moab had hired the prophet Balaam to speak a curse over the children of Israel.   He saw Israel as a threat to his kingdom.   Numbers 22:2-3 – “Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. And Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel.” When the enemy sees the people of God rising up in faith, he becomes very concerned and moves to keep us from fulfilling our assignment.   We learn in Numbers, Balaam could only speak what the Lord gave him to speak.   Instead of a curse he speaks a blessing. The enemy seeks our destruction, but God!   Listen to the conversation between God and Satan in ...

They Turned Back in the Day of Battle

Psalms 78:9 – “ “The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.”             Ephraim was the younger of two sons of Joseph.   His first born was Manasseh.   It was Ephraim that received the blessing of Jacob.   The tribe of Ephraim became the largest of the ten northern tribes of Israel.   Many times the Bible used the name Ephraim to represent the whole nation of Israel.             In verse 9 they are armed and carrying bows.   They are dressed, equipped, and ready to battle.   Yet we learn that they turned back in the day of battle.   The Bible identifies this as sin.   To turn back in the day of battle was displeasing to God.               To be armed meant that they were equipped with armor, a sword, and a shield. ...
